Ida Chong, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development, addresses 750 people gathered to celebrate this year's B.C. Innovation Council Awards in Vancouver. Minister Chong congratulated the winners - some of B.C.'s top researchers and inventors in health, engineering and other fields – for their accomplishments, applauded B.C.'s regional science fair winners who also attended, and thanked the council for its work to accelerate the growth of B.C.'s economy through science and technology.

ICE FUND BACKS UNIQUE BIOMASS TECHNOLOGY
VICTORIA – With support from the provincial government’s ICE Fund, Nexterra Energy Corp. is implementing an alternative energy system that will cut operating costs for a Lower Mainland industry and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 22,000 tonnes per year, Technology, Trade and Economic Development Minister Ida Chong said.

CANADA, B.C., CHINA SIGN REBUILDING AGREEMENT
BEIJING – The governments of Canada, British Columbia and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will support an $8-million wood-frame rebuilding project to assist China in its reconstruction efforts following last May’s devastating Wenchuan earthquake.

B.C. TECHNOLOGY SCORES MARKET SUCCESS
VICTORIA – Using technology developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver-based Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc. has achieved the first commercialization in the United States of a process using municipal wastewater to make environmentally safe fertilizer, Technology, Trade and Economic Development Minister Ida Chong said.

B.C. UNIVERSITIES TOP CHARTS IN RESEARCH INCOME GROWTH
VICTORIA – All four research-intensive universities in B.C. have earned high marks for attracting increased research dollars since 2002, according to reports released by Research Infosource Inc., Technology, Trade and Economic Development Minister Ida Chong announced.

The Ministry of Technology, Trade and Economic Development is the primary provincial agency for creating a strong, prosperous and diverse economy.
