Honourable Gordon Campbell
In June 2001, Gordon Campbell was sworn in as British Columbia’s 34th premier, with the largest majority in B.C. history. He was re-elected in May 2005, making him the first premier in 22 years – and only the fifth in B.C. history – to be elected to two consecutive terms.
Since taking office, Premier Campbell has worked to unleash the full power of the British Columbia economy. His government implemented new regulatory and tax reforms that have spurred growth and investment opportunities in sectors of the provincial economy such as tourism, trade, and green energy.
Today, British Columbia offers some of the most competitive personal and business tax rates in Canada and is leading the country in job creation, economic strength, business confidence and fiscal responsibility.
British Columbia has launched an aggressive Pacific Gateway Program, investing in priority infrastructure upgrades that will ensure ports, highways, railways and airports can meet the growing volume of Asia-Pacific trade and ensure the province retains its position as a leading North American trade gateway.
Expanding the long-standing business and cultural ties between British Columbia and Asia is a key part of Premier Campbell’s vision. He established the Premier’s Asia-Pacific Trade Council to advance British Columbia’s profile in Asia and to ensure the provincial economy is prepared to respond to the needs of businesses and investors in some of the world’s fastest growing markets. To reinforce this, the Premier is establishing a permanent presence in key Asian markets with representatives working on the ground to increase business opportunities and partnerships between the region and British Columbia.
During his first term in office, British Columbia was also awarded the right to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which is further stimulating B.C.’s economy.
Under Premier Campbell’s leadership, British Columbia is tackling the challenge of climate change with a commitment to reducing the province’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020, and investments in green innovation and development.
The province is home to a growing green-technology sector, with numerous research centers and corporations engaged in cutting-edge development of alternative energy, alternative fuels and energy-efficient products.
Premier Campbell was Mayor of Vancouver for three successive terms from 1986 to 1993. Prior to that, he was a developer. He served for two years under CUSO as a secondary school teacher in Nigeria, Africa. Premier Campbell is married to wife Nancy, a high school principal, they have two sons.
