PROVINCE PROVIDES $1.7 MILLION TO CELEBRATE HERITAGE

2008-11-06 - The living roof measures 2.5 hectares – the size of 15 hockey rinks, with more than 400,000 indigenous plants and grasses, from 19 Northwest species. The expanded facility also features a restored marine habitat underneath the building, built into the foundation. The project won the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC Award for Innovative Marine Habitat Design in 2006.

2008-10-21 - October 21, 2008 - Minister Bennett took part in the grand opening of the expanded Canadian Rockies International Airport. The Province contributed $4.5 million to the project, which increases air access to the Kootenay region, through the Transportation Partnerships Program.

2008-10-17 - Minister Bennett joins Wet'suwet'en Chief Woos and CEO Lorne Borgal, president of 2020 Development on Hudson Bay Mountain to open a new eight-kilometre-long 'Trail to Town.' 

The three year plan will see adding another chair lift to Hudson Bay Mountain, the addition of 10 runs including the completion of the 'Trail to Town.' This gives Hudson Bay Mountain more than a 3,700 foot vertical drop, elevating its stature as one of the top five 'longest run' mountains in British Columbia. 
 
'Smithers is one of British Columbia's best kept secrets in tourism,' said Bennett. 'The local economy can only benefit from development of the mountain ski area right in town. Together with the planned expanded tarmac at the Smithers airport, and the natural beauty and recreation opportunities, the future of the Bulkley Valley is bright.'

The revitalization of the stadium provides new year-round event opportunities, and extends the life of the facility for another 30 years. In May, Premier Gordon Campbell outlined the Province’s plans for the 25 year old stadium, including the addition of a retractable roof after the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The announcement was made by the six APCD partners; the Province of British Columbia, City of Vancouver, Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver Foundation, Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and 2010 Legacies Now.
